I went back up to my friends camp this weekend and had a great time. Except for one little thing. The damn spider that decided to attack me while I was sleeping. Some how my hands got chewed up by the spider. I can tell it's a spider by the number of welts and how close together they are. I must have at least 30 bites between my two hands. It's crazy!! I am glad it was only my hands though. If it had gone after my face it would not have been good. I must have really pissed off some spider when I slept where I did.
Luckily they don't itch much but they sure look bad. Well the tasty beer at the Adirondack Brewery was worth it all. Next time I'll just have to remember to spray my area of the camp. Geeze!
Two friends of mine that have a camp up north about two hours asked me to join them on their little treck up there today. They wanted to check on the camp to see how it was doing after the winter and also wanted to visit a few friends who own Adirondack Steak and Seafood Company right in Lake Placid. The picture of the bar (top middle) was probably taken from right where we sat. Food was amazing and their brewed beer was awesome.
The drive up is beautiful. The Adirondacks are a must visit for any nature lovers who are in the Northeast. The weather was cloudy but no rain so no complaints. We stopped a few places to check out some water falls and some rivers. With all the rain we have had and the melt off from the mountains they were all running well. I took a bunch of pictures of some of the things we saw.
Lake Placid is where the Olympic Winter Games of 1980 were held with White Face as the main mountain.
It was definitely a fun day and I look forward to going back up to the camp. They invited me and it will be a lot of fun. Their friends at the restaurant were amazing and I look forward to seeing them again.
Happy Earth Day! What are some of your favorite ways to reduce, reuse and recycle?
As a designer there is one big way I try to be environmentally conscious. It is with the paper I recommend to my clients. A lot of paper companies are doing more and more to bring better quality papers made out of recycled materials. There definitely seems to be a big push about this throughout the design community. This is good and hopefully it will continue to grow. You can read some more about how paper companies are doing this in the article Thinking Green by Gordon Kaye in the magazine GD USA.
Happy Earth Day to all! It really couldn't be a much better day weather wise in Upstate New York. Spring is finally here!
I took this over the weekend when I was at Live Without Annette's gig at Humbugs in Glens Falls, New York. They have requested I give their existing site a makeover under my design business Prepressology. I excepted the challenge and look forward to the project. I thought a good start would be to get some good photos for the site. Especially of the individual band members and of the whole band together. It was a lot of fun being on photo duty. Although, I had to fend off the sister-in-law of the lead singer because she didn't know why I was taking photos. Ha!
Here is my favorite out of the shoot from the gig. The lights gave this photo some great character. This one is definitely getting printed and hung up in my office.
I was introduced this morning to a really great podcast. Viki, of PandaPause.com, was talking with me this morning when she told me about the Acoustic Long Island Podcast.
It's a great music podcast that is recorded at Cool Beanz Cafe in St. James, Long Island. It has a wonderful warm feel to it. The music is spectacular and original. Musicians have great character and make you feel like you have known them as a close friend.
If you like coffee house acoustic music then this is a PERFECT podcast for you. Just as Viki said to me this morning, I hope to make the trip to visit this awesome place some day. Maybe I could kill two birds with one stone by meeting up with her there. That would be awesome!
Thanks Viki for introducing me to this
great podcast!
Today was crazy! We knew it was coming and the fact that the weather man was using "feet" in his measurements was not a good sign. Even over a foot it's still something like 12-18 inches. Nope not with this one. It was 1-3 feet!!
It's started slow and then it just dumped. I got up this morning
and it was snowing hard but there was only about 4-6 inches on the
ground so I decided to head to work. Got there without much of a
problem. Roads weren't great but it's the northeast...I am used to
that. Got to work and 1/2 the staff had called in. I drive 30 miles to
work and the ones less than 5 couldn't make it in?! Slackers!!
So I work and work and work. Look outside a few times and it's snowing hard. I figure I am there and I might as well just work my 8 hours not worrying about it. Well then they make an announcement that they are closing the plant at 2. This is at 1130. I talk to a few people and they keep telling me to leave. They were just about chasing me out the door. We got permission to leave earlier if we wanted. I was going to stick it out until 2 but they told me not to bc of how far I had to go. So I left at 1230.
Got out to my car and there was about 12 inches on and around it. Maybe more. It was nuts! Had trouble getting out of my stop but finally did. Got on the road right out the driveway and it had over 6 inches on it. It was horrible. Got on the main highway and that was worse!! So I plugged away at 30-40 mph all the way home. Trying not to get blown off the highway by the trucks or get pulled into a ditch by a tire rut. I was a little tense by the time I got home. It was like they said f-it about the highway!
So I finally get home and go to pull in the drive way only to get stuck. The snow was up over the bumper of my SUV and I couldn't plow through it. I was stuck at the end of the driveway. So I get out of my car, leave it there and head inside. We must of had 12-16 inches on the driveway. That was at 1pm and it's still snowing now at almost 9pm.
I did the driveway once. Thank god for the monster snowblower! Got the car unstuck and cleared everything out. I got done with that about 4 so I am sure there is at least another 6 inches on the driveway now.
Guess it's supposed to be worse at work and I think it will be interesting to see how much is up there tomorrow morning.
Anyway, here are some pictures from today. Not many...it's snow, it's white and it's not the best photo subject. LOL!
Hard to see on the way home...
Good thing we have the larger snowblower. It was partway up my bumper!
My measurement at 9pm tonight...
A nicer pic to go with this crazy storm...
Guess winter has finally decided to show up in the eastern part of NY. I would say all of NY but western NY where they are digging out from about 11 feet of snow would most likely send me hate mail. Those poor people are probably still trying to figure out what the hell just hit them. 11 feet is crazy!
I guess from what the weather reports are saying we could end up with 1-2 feet of snow. Personally I don't feel it is a good sign when they start using feet instead of inches. Usually it's 12-18 inches or something like that. Not this time! This time they are pulling out the feet.
So I have the snow blower gassed up and my winter jacket, gloves and hat all set by the door. The alarm clock is set for an hour earlier and the coffee pot is on the timer. With all that ready to go...you know what will happen? It won't snow. Can't say I would be disappointed. Ha!
Actually it sounds like the worse will be during the day tomorrow. Getting to work doesn't sound like it will be a problem but getting home could be a challenge. Oh how I look forward to that after a day at work.
I'll have my camera with me tomorrow to take photos and I'll post some when I get a chance. If you never hear from me again I probably got buried by a snow drift or the snow falling off the office roof. I can tell you'll all miss me. I can just tell.
Some senator thinks he is going to get a ban on cell phones, blackberries, iPods and other such devices being used while someone crosses the street. I thought this has to be a joke. Well I guess I was wrong because according to the article found on Newsday.com...
You could get clipped $100 for walking, jogging or cycling across a New York street with an iPod plugged into your ears under a new law proposed by a state senator from Brooklyn.
I could understand the ban for drivers of motor vehicles but now walkers, joggers and cyclist can't wear them?! Ok, maybe cyclist I can understand but if you can chew gum and walk why can't you listen to your Ipod? Next they'll tell me I can't chew gum because I might choke if I bump into someone else. This is all ridiculous. Can you tell this irritates me?!
You really want to know why... Well I am a hearing impaired individual and this makes me wonder what the difference is between myself not being able to hear on coming traffic and a person wearing a headset from a mobile device?? So would I get fined because I might not hear everything I should. I know this is absurd but then so is this stupid law being proposed. If I can take personal responsibility to take care around traffic why the hell can't a person using a device impairing their hearing?!
With all that is going on in the world and all the issues that need to be dealt with I think this is a waste of my tax dollars and a waste of my time. I am ashamed to say I am a NY resident when stupid things like this come up. We have homeless dying on the streets and convicted child rapists wandering the streets but instead we are going to worry about some smuck who isn't smart enough to watch where he is walking.
Please don't misunderstand this as being insensitive for those who had unfortunate accidents. However that is exactly what they were...unfortunate accidents. I think it's about time people take some personal responsibility for their own safety.
Tomorrow night (Feb 3 @ 9pm) the band Live Without Annette will be performing at Green Mansions Golf Club in Warrensburg, New York. This is there first gig at this location and they are pretty excited to bring their tunes to the a new area. After a nice visit their last weekend with the bassist, I think it's going to be a great night.
There are some sweet dart boards and a very nice pool table. The bar is well stocked and the staff is very friendly. Definitely a great spot for a great night out. If you are looking for a place to take a date, this is definitely a place I recommend. It's a bit off the main drag but it's a diamond in the ruff.
Join myself and the band for some good times! Hope to see some of you there!
